Volunteer lawyer helps family avoid homelessness
A single mother of two young children withheld her rent due to the poor conditions of her apartment. She tried to get repairs made for almost six months, but the landlord refused. She lost hundreds of dollars worth of groceries due to a refrigerator problem. She also had severe mold, an exposed heating element and a front door that was not secure. The landlord served her with an eviction notice for nonpayment of rent, and she faced losing her housing subsidy.? A volunteer attorney helped the woman successfully argue that no rent was due because of the poor conditions in her apartment and the case was dismissed. Without legal help, this young family would have faced homelessness or faced continued living in an unsafe and unsanitary home.
